Lawrence has practiced in the business law, real estate and insolvency areas since 1976. He is also active in the local business community as an investor and advisor in real estate, technology, life sciences and other transactions and manages a family holding company.

Lawrence was educated at the University of Toronto and Queen's University Law School. He joined Soloway, Wright upon his call to the bar in 1976.

Lawrence has been active in a wide range of community volunteer activities and was awarded the Queen Elizabeth Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 in recognition of his contributions. He is currently chair of the board of directors of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
